Brands believe this method of approaching promoting 3D permits buyers to choose whether or not they wish to utilise the feature when they’re ready, while convincing them that their newly purchased television is future-proofed. This gives customers the appearance of having the choice to utilize a feature already present in a purchase that they made, rather than making them get a technology for which they could be unready, according to the brands.

It projected 3D TV shipments would rise to 23.4 million units this year from last year’s 4.2 million units, gaining further to 159 million units in 2015. By that time, iSuppli recounted, 3D TVs would account for more than 1/2 global flat panel cargos.

Passive 3D TV Buyers Guide for 2011 3D LED/LCD HDTVs: BigPictureBigSound.

Passive 3D TV sets work a bit differently from active 3D TVs. Instead of requiring expensive battery-powered active shutter LCD glasses, passive 3D TVs use light, inexpensive polarized 3D glasses to create the 3D image.  It’s similar to how we watch 3D movies in theaters and, in fact those RealD glasses from 3D theaters will work on most passive 3D TV setsVIZIO-XVT3D650SV.jpg

3D TVs arrived in stores last spring to great fanfare, and there are now dozens of LCD and plasma sets with 3D capability in stores. Consumers are intrigued—but also curious. The big question, of course, is whether these new TVs can transport the 3D excitement from movie theaters to our homes.

Tech makers think three dimensions are the next big thing after HD… I hope not….at the IFA tech show here in Berlin based on raw square footage in the booths 3D TV is everywhere…. The massive booths of consumer-electronics giants such as Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, and Toshiba are dominated by 3D…. All the 3D at the show had one thing in common: It s lousy…. Much of it was unusually blurry some of the sets that required glasses looked only slightly better than Fraunhofer s no-specs technology demo. None of it rose to the level of being good, and I came away thinking that the level of hoopla was bizarre given the lackluster products being hyped.

3D TV occupies so much IFA real estate because the electronics industry thinks that teeming masses of people are going to be willing to buy new TVs and don uncomfortable, expensive glasses in order to watch three-dimensional content. I think consumers are smarter than that. I think will prove to be a fad or, at least, a mistake….
